- and out of his mind. A company of travelling players arrives at the
- LordÆs house.

- Lucentio arrives in Padua with his manservant, Tranio. They
- encounter Baptista with his two daughters, Katherine and Bianca.

- suitors, Hortensio and Gremio, call a truce in their rivalry for
- BiancaÆs love ù but now Lucentio has fallen in love with her, too.
- He decides to change places with Tranio, so that he can attend on
- Bianca disguised as a schoolmaster ù whilst Tranio (calling himself
- ôLucentioö) will also present himself as a suitor to Bianca.
-
- Scene 2
- Petruccio arrives in Padua with his servant, Gremio. They call on
- Hortensio, and Petruccio explains that he is hoping to find a rich wife.

- the right wife for him!
- Whilst they are talking, Gremio comes along with Lucentio,
- who is now disguised as a schoolmaster (calling himself ôCambioö).

- they are joined by a third competitor, who calls himself ôLucentioö
- (but who, in fact, is Tranio in disguise).
-
- Act 2
-
- Scene 1
- Katherine and Bianca are quarrelling. Tranio (ôLucentioö) and
- Petruccio introduce themselves to Baptista, and Petruccio begins his
- wooing of Katherine. They fight, but he is determined to marry her.
- Gremio and Tranio (ôLucentioö) make bids for the hand of Bianca;
- Gremio is defeated ù but ôLucentioö must get his father to secure the
- promises he has made.
-

- suitors) for the arrival of KatherineÆs bridegroom. Biondello

- Lucentio and Tranio stay behind. Gremio returns to report what has
- happened in the church. Petruccio and Katherine ù now married ù

- won Bianca ù provided that he can get his fatherÆs support (which
- Baptista demanded in Act 2, Scene 1). A passing Pedant is persuaded
- to impersonate Vincentio, LucentioÆs father.
-
- Scene 3
- Petruccio continues the ôtamingö of Katherine, refusing to let her eat,

- everything he says.
-
- Scene 4
- Tranio (ôLucentioö) introduces the Pedant ù who is pretending to be
- his father (ôVincentioö) ù to Baptista. They go to draw up the

- are revealed.
-

- Katherine wins the wager for Petruccio, and delivers a lecture on the
- proper duty of a wife to her husband.
